Book Awakening: A LitRPG/GameLit Series (World of Magic Book 1) Review :

I received an ARC for this book, asking for a true opinion upon it. I liked the book very much, so I have since purchased it ond preodered book two. However, I will do my best to write as true an opinion on it as I can. English is not my first language, so please exuse any ankward spelling and meaning...When I read the description of the book, it sounded somewhat familiar yet also original too me and I jumper on the chance to read this debut book and start of a series. The story of a man that choses to lose himself in a game forever is maybe not totally unik, but the author made a great job giving good reason for MC to do so. I thought it was very well done. I also liked the clever (if somewhat obvious) clues that the ”second chance” program the MC becomes part of is something other/more than just a philantropic company... And I liked the humor and snark from the ”game” to the MC. I at times got a little annoyed with MC in the first half of the book, but felt that the MC became better and more likeable later on. I considred what annoyed me with MC at first, and came to realize I felt MC at times had a bit patronizing attitude, that felt of-putting to me, a sort of ” I know so much and is so clever, see I have a great education so OF CAUSE I deserve to get totally owerpowedred legendary powers. Who are those ”lowely peasants” ( NPCs and other players) to till me what to do! However, this may be because I as a Swede is raised with the belief that the absolut WORST thing you can do is believe and EXPRESS that you are better than everybody else.... So I don`t like that in an MC ....However, as rhe story picked up its pace, MC stopped ”lording it” over everybody, and the originality of the story picked up. So...now I eagerly await next book in the series!
So one this this story does not have and that is consistency. Also the litprg feels forced. We don't see any correlation with the litrpg elements and anything in the world. When we do see the stat blocks it feels forced and like the author just remembered they are a thing. I think this story could have done better with out the forcing of the game elements and maybe been a fantasy. The game elements subtracted from this story rather then added.Main problem though is the pacing and randomness.Minor spoilers below. For example the MC wants to save stat points because he can "train" stats the old fashioned way. That lasts all of a few pages and then randomly with no prodding he assigns them anyway and continues to do so. Don't know why we had to spend paragraphs of the MC explaining this feature and telling us why he uses it if he changes his mind suddenly.Another early example 8s the dungeon. It has this child like nature and doesn't know anything about itsself and talks about trapping his soul. I get a very CAL vibe talking to Danny from it at first. But then suddenly it's this wise all powerful ancient dungeon who knows about just about everything and can temporarily him and talk to the creator and do tortorials....Or when he summons his "fear" minion to help. It is shaping up to be this big fight or battle of wills and then...nope. suddenly the minion submits. He just had to say submit and it did. It even reveals it was always there even before he manifested it? I don't know. It's confusing.Basically the whole book is like this. It's all over the place. There is no consistency at all. It's like the author wrote a few pages and put it aside to come back months later and didn't bother to re read what he had put before trying to finish that chapter.
